Madras Christian College founded as a School in 1837 in the town of Madras, the Institution was built and its character shaped by a host of Scottish missionaries such as Anderson and Miller, Hogg and Boyd. Many dedicated Indian teachers as well as generations of brilliant students contribute to its success story. Madras Christian College is known as much for its academic standing and leadership building as it is for social commitment. Today the College has around 4500 students (both ladies and gentlemen as they are traditionally called) and over 220 faculty members serving in 31 departments.

FACTS
The institution is ranked among the Top Ten Liberal Arts and Science Colleges in India. The Institute has received the Rating of A+ (equivalent to 90-95%) by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Madras Christian College has entered into the 173rd year of glorious service to the Nation. The college was granted AUTONOMY in July 1978.

The college now has twenty-nine University related academic departments offering undergraduate and/or postgraduate courses. Many of the departments also offer research degrees through M.Phil. and Ph.D. programmes. Among other programmes introduced during the period of autonomy are diploma and certificate courses offered through the School of Continuing Education. Vocational degree courses are offered in the departments of History, Zoology and Commerce. The students opting for them have the advantage of studying all core subjects like regular students. The vocational courses reflect an industry-institution tie-up and are employment oriented with provision for higher education. Trivia

The 365-acre decent, idyllic campus with its rare, diverse flora and fauna is a great joy to live in. The illustrious alumni included great names like President Radhakrishnan. Mahatma Gandhi agreed to chair a student session in its premises in George Town in 1916. Billy Graham spoke in the famous Anderson Hall in Tambaram in 1956. The three halls of residence for boys-St Thomas's, Selaiyur and Bishop Heber Halls- were raised on Tambaram site. The Girls' hostel which was functioning in Guindy since 1950 was moved into Tambaram in 1968, which was subsequently named after Mrs Agnes Martin.
